Hi Martin, I couldn't SPEAK or understand ???? We use speak when referring to a language. I speak English. I am talking to you about this. IT is also correct to say I am speaking about this. But it is not correct to say I talk English.

I had a little difficulty with the phrase after "I couldn't talk or understand" but after a few times I got it; it is "from listening to." I could not speak or understand English from listening (to it). I started to improve my English since the beginning of the March.
And, obviously your effort has been worthwhile!
A native English speaker would say ... I started to study to improve my English at the beginning of last March Very well done. I could not understand what you said right after speak or understand... Everything else was good ( I have a brother named Martin-now I know how to say his name in Polish!) Keep studying, you are doing well.

"I started to improve my English at the beginning of March." - because this is one, completed action.
Or you can say "I have been improving my English since the beginning of March." - this is a continuing process.
